Stand up fighting will see both players positioning themselves around the cage, exchanging strikes, attempting slams, and using their skills to gain the advantage over their opponents. Each player draws a hand of cards featuring a variety of strikes targeting locations of the body, as well as takedown cards should they want to change things up. Players draw from the same deck and must try to figure out the weaknesses of their opponents and decide when to drain their hand of cards, or hold back for more defensive options.

Once a takedown succeeds, things head to the mat! Players will draw from the ground game deck and play cards in an attempt to fatigue their opponent, inflict damage, and possibly end the fight outright with a submission! Each card is marked with a submission move, and body location. When playing these cards, players have a choice of trying to fatigue their opponent, damage the marked location of the body, or attempting a submission. Submissions are very powerful and can end the fight in one move, but your opponent must be properly fatigued for you to attempt one without gassing yourself out! Also, failing a submission attempt will give your opponent their choice of where they want the fight to go. If your fighter isn't comfortable on the ground, you can always attempt to stand up and bring things back into your world, but not before your opponent gets a free shot!

Even though both players will be drawing from the same deck, they'll rarely have the same strategy! Each player core strengths and weaknesses will be determined by their fighting style. Whether it's the dangerous combos of the Pure Striker, the punishing ground and pound of the Wrestler, the exhausting grappling of the Submission Fighter, or the violent throws of the Judo Fighter. Player select their fighters in secret so they can't make their decision based off their opposition. In MMA, styles make fights, and Caged In is no different!
